Lillie White

You've never heard anything quite like this before.
Beautiful melodies floating above innovative instrumentation: didgeridoo, djembe, cello & more.
Think world, jazz, blues and beyond...

The world of Lillie White is new.

Origins

The lyrics and music are written by London-based, Australian professional jazz/swing singer Lizzie Scott.

Having spent extensive time in the Flinders Ranges, north of her native Adelaide, as well as in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, Lizzie found a spiritual home amongst the unique sights, sounds and textures of the Australian landscape. The beauty of the unique flora opened her creativity and she found songs just popping into her head.

The lyrics

Lizzie's lyrics for each of the tracks tell a story, steeped as they are in mystery and ritual.
Based on elements of earth and spirit, the songs bring to life a host of mystical characters, situations and happenings. Love looms large, as time and space lose their boundaries.

Lizzie realized that to enhance the poetry of her lyrics, a unique musical style would be required. She began experimenting with a wide range of melodic styles, before finding the songs' unique voice. Inspired by Eastern modes, the melodies are deeply soulful, yet maintain a purity which speaks directly to the listener's soul.

The music

She began collaborating with Colin Simenski (Don Conreaux) and Ray Dickaty (Spiritualized) and later they were joined by Katie Burden and Oliver Kasicki. The band brought didgeridoo, tibetan singing bowls, tabla, jew's harp, Aboriginal sticks, baritone& tenor saxophone, flute, keyboards and djembe drums to the mix.
In 2004 cello player Ginny Davis joined the band, as well as talented Khoomii overtone singer, Rami Shaafi.

Together they created an hypnotic and atmospheric soundscape. The songs blend world, blues and indigenous elements into a consistently mystical, rhythmic and ethereal whole. As Lizzie says, "when I was in nature, I had moments where the elements would wash over me, raising my vibration and overwhelming my soul. This is why I chose the didgeridoo, singing bowls and cello. These are very resonant instruments, whose frequencies are capable of transfixing, elevating and ultimately healing the soul."

Where else would you hear a cello soaring over the incessant growl of a didge?
Or the drops of musical water from a djembe decorating the rhythmic structures of the tabla?

Fans of world music, soul, instrumental experimentation and just lovers of beautiful singing will find much to enjoy here. This is music for the mystic too; music for those whose spiritual wanderings are always enhanced by the haunting and hypnotic.
